The root CA signs the issuing CAs, and only them: p2s, which signs the router's VPN server certificate and the users' certificates, s2s, which signs the router's site-to-site certificate and those of its peers, and the general-purpose CAs of pki.issuing_cas. The PKI is kept in ou=pki of the router's directory (vpnrouter_ldap), which root reaches through the local socket. Each CA is an entry cn= of class vpnRouterAuthority, with its certificate, key, CRL and CRL number; while the root key is not on the router, a new issuing CA has its key and a CSR and is pending until import_ca takes its certificate, signed offline. Each certificate a CA issued is an entry serialNumber= of class vpnRouterCertificate under the CA, with its kind, template, names, expiry and revocation; the router's own certificates and the users' keep their keys there, as the router and the OpenVPN profile need them, and a certificate issued for anything else is kept without its key. A user's certificate is also the userCertificate of the user's entry. A retired CA keeps its entry, renamed cn=-
